Free Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert
Saturday, July 31 - 8PM POPS CONCERT & Fantastic FIREWORKS
On the lawn at Fort Stanwix National Monument
A good portion of the first half of the July 31st Syracuse Symphony Pops Concert will highlight music that was popular in the 1950's. Both South Pacific by Rodgers
& Hammerstein and the Guys & Dolls by Frank Loesser were top shows in that decade both as Broadway and ultimately as movies. Additionally one of the biggest movies of the time was Bridge on the River Kwai where the British soldiers whistled the Colonel Bogey March. The SSO has put those materials together to make for a 50's segment
that will include a lot of recognizable tunes. South Pacific just had a recent Broadway revival.
So with the Sousa marches, and the great patriotic music of George M. Cohan and Calvin Custer's Dixieland medley along with the usual 1812 & Stars and Stripes, there will be plenty to celebrate.
If it rains Saturday, please visit RomeChamber.com to check on the status of the concert. If the event is postponed because of rain, the notice will be posted online by 5:00PM and the concert will be rescheduled for 8PM Sunday, August 1 at Fort Stanwix National Monument. In the event of Rain on Sunday, the concert location will be moved to Rome Free Academy.

Christopher Destito 1955-2010
Chris was a tireless advocate for our community, a dedicated leader who kept the health and well-being of his family, business, and community foremost in his heart and mind. Actively involved in many local and regional community organizations, his energy, enthusiasm, and keen business sense helped to guide Rome through some very challenging times during the past 30 years. He held several leadership positions including Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors, however his first love was always serving as Chairman of our Honor America Days Committee, a position he so devotedly held since 1984. Chris was steadfast in his desire to lift people's spirits and their pride each year by organizing many of the features of Honor America Days, most notable the Honor America Days Parade and Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert at Fort Stanwix — enjoyed annually by thousands. He loved being involved in promoting the positive attributes of our community and its people. An avid supporter of the many military organizations located over the years at Griffiss, Chris was Rome's ambassador to the world. He was unwavering in his support of the men and women in uniform. His patriotism and his selfless service to this community were unmatched, always doing as much as he could to make visiting military and newcomers to Rome feel at home. We'll all dearly miss him.
If you would like to make a financial contribution to help finance the memorial, checks should be made to Rome Chamber/ Chris Memorial and sent to the Chamber office.
